What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a truly holistic system of healing. “Ayu” means “life” and “Veda” means “science” or “knowledge”. This 5000+ year old philosophy and art of healing not only provides us the tools required to heal ourselves once we are ill, but more, it provides us the wisdom needed to prevent long term and acute illness or dis-ease in our body, mind, and soul.  This profound philosophy addresses quite literally every aspect of human life, and is organized into different branches to address everything from pre-birth to end of life.

The science of Ayurveda is based on an ancient philosophy, which essentially defines every living thing in existence from a very elemental and energetic level. This deep and complex philosophy allows the practitioner to understand their clients from an energetic standpoint, as opposed to a diseased standpoint. The disease is, instead, thought of and seen as “dis-ease” or a state of imbalance of one’s unique physiological make-up or “constitution”, which may be corrected through right-living. Right-living includes daily habits and life-style routines, herbs, diet, correct hygiene, exercise and even proper management of one’s emotions, thoughts and attitudes! All of these factors of life should support the primary constitution of the individual, and will help the person to build and maintain high energy levels, greater immunity and overall health with the goal of attaining the highest level of fulfillment and potential.

The most foundational concept understood and implemented by the Ayurvedic Practitioner is the theory of Tridosha. Tridosha is a based on the understanding of the elements; Earth, Water, Fire, Air & Ether. These elements embody a unique set of characteristics, qualities and traits which correspond to the traits and qualities of every material thing that exists in the natural world, including human beings. Because our physical bodies are comprised of a very unique set of qualities, traits, and characteristics, and because we also know that all physical matter is comprised of a unique set of elements, at the most foundational level, then it must be the case that treating our physical make up must be effective by using this approach. Once we determine which element, or elements, we are deficient in, then we can use herbs, foods, and activities, even mental exercises to consciously bring ourselves back into balance and optimal health!

What does “SuryaVeda” mean?

The term “SuryaVeda” is derived from the Sanskrit language, and means the “Wisdom of the Sun”. The word “Surya” refers to both the Sun and the Sun God, as known by the ancients. “Veda” is the eternal wisdom that is found through Natural Law. SuryaVeda is dedicated to sharing with you the wisdom and healing power of the Sun as revealed in the ancient healing modality of Ayurveda.

The healing power of the Sun has been universally recognized throughout the history of many ancient spiritual traditions, cultures, and natural modes of healing. The Sun has the power to purify, clarify, enlighten, and heal.

The power of the Sun causes the plants to grow, thereby giving life. It provides us food to eat. It puts all living beings into motion. The sun is also associated with energy and activity.  Heat from the sun causes activation within us, thereby waking us up to our true PURPOSE in life.

About Lauren

Lauren has been using herbs since roughly 2009 when she decided to take her health into her own hands.

After using herbs successfully for an extended period of time, she began to look deeper into the history of herbal medicine and also more authentic, ancient, and traditional forms and uses of not only medicine but healing and healthful living. She was ultimately lead to Ayurveda, which is quite literally as far back as you can go.

In September of 2018 she completed 2 years of intense and in depth study with her teacher Nicholas Schnell, RH AHG through Prairie Star Center for Herbal Studies (now North Star Center for Herbal Studies) Home & Family Herbalist Program, where her love of herbs grew immensely.

During this course, she was simultaneously taking David Frawley’s Ayurvedic correspondence course online, and was asked to co-teach a class on the 7 Dhatus (tissues) from her Ayurvedic material. This would have been Lauren’s first time speaking and giving a lecture on Ayurveda, as well as the first time she realized how much she loved teaching and felt called to continue doing so.

She began practicing with herbs and offering free services to almost anyone who was open to receiving her advice, while she continued her 2 years of herbal studies. She graduated and was awarded a certificate of completion, earning her the title of “Certified Herbalist” . It was at this time when she was specificallly instructed by her teacher to go out to fill “big shoes”, as she was hand picked to be the only and first recipient of the  honorary “Sue Moon Scholarship” in the class.

She elected to continue her studies for an additional 6 months so that she would be trained to practice herbalism in a clinical setting. In March, 2019 she graduated from the Advanced Level and Student Clinic program and was awarded a certificate and granted the title of “Clinical Herbalist”.

Later that year, in December, she was awarded a certificate of completion from from the American Institute of Vedic Studies (AIVS) after completing 4 years of the Ayurvedic Healing Course, earning her the title of “Ayurvedic Life-Style Consultant”. The AIVS  is one of (if not the) most highly respected schools of Ayurveda, among other authentic Vedic teachings, in North America.
